Standard Operating Procedure for handling new applicants

Background.

The Nominating Subcommittee will provide names of qualified and interested potential NAG members to the Steering Committee for approval. The Nominating Subcommittee will coordinate nominations for Chair, Vice-chair and Secretary/treasurer within the Steering Committee. The Nominating Subcommittee will also provide names of qualified and interested potential Steering Committee members to the NAG membership. Additionally, nominees for NAG members and Steering Committee members can come from NAG suggestions coordinated through the Nomination Subcommittee

Standard Operating Procedure for handling new applicants.

1. Receive a letter or call from interested person.

2. Solicit a letter of intent and an updated resume or CV. The letter of intent should address CRITERIA

  • (1) Demonstrated interest and commitment to zoo animal nutrition, as evidenced by - designation as a zoo nutritionist in a zoo, regular attendance at nutrition meetings, provision of nutritional advice to zoos / collaboration on projects with zoos.
  • (2) Expertise in nutrition / diet management - advanced degree in nutrition, demonstrated expertise in zoo or wildlife nutrition / dietary husbandry / feeding management.
  • (3) No substantial financial interest in zoo food manufacturing. Individuals who may possess financial interests, i.e. who possess significant financial interests in animal feed manufacturing, who perform consulting for feed manufacturers, or those employed by feed companies will be considered for full-corporate membership on a case by case basis as to the extent of their financial interest.
  • Those not meeting membership criteria, including students with an interest in the field, or have limited time to commit, are eligible for Affiliate status.
  • 3. Route the letter and CV through the Nominating Subcommittee to receive votes.

    4. Lets the SC know the vote for their comments in a timely fashion (1 week to comment). Gain approval by the SC.

    5. Determine whether candidate is "active" or "inactive" based on involvement and/or interest.

    6. Inform the person of their status. Add them to the membership directory, add them to NAG Notes, send them a letter of acceptance, and forward a membership directory.

    • Post on NAG Notes - the person’s contact information
    • Mike update and forward a membership list.
