Position Overview The Wildlife Nutrition Fellow is a University of Florida/Department of Animal Sciences employee who works as a member of the Animal Nutrition Center Team at Walt Disney World / Animal Programs. Disney’s Animal Kingdom is developing its Animal Nutrition Research Program with the purpose of improving the knowledge of the nutritional needs of non-domesticated species as an integral part of a multi-disciplinary approach to the conservation and scientific understanding of wild animal species. Major Duties and Responsibilities: The emphasis of this fellowship will be the assessment of diets for terrestrial and aquatic captive wild species as part of the preventive medicine program within Disney’s Animal Kingdom Animal Programs (Orlando, FL). As a member of the Animal Nutrition Center Team, the research fellow will help investigate the impact of using different diets / ingredients on the health and performance of the animal population. Particular emphasis will be given to developing nutrition laboratory techniques, (Near Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy, X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometry, in vitro systems for acidogenic value of feeds, etc.) in the assessment of diets. The Research Fellow will also work with Animal Programs staff to develop guest experiences that educate the public about nutrition, and its role within conservation programs. The Research Fellow might also have teaching opportunities within the Department of Animal Sciences, University of Florida in Gainesville and at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. The successful candidate will help disseminate results of research projects through appropriate journals, articles and scientific presentations. Qualifications: 1 Ability to work well in a team atmosphere. 2 Ability to work well with a cross section of people with diverse backgrounds. 3 Strong background in animal nutrition (Ph.D. preferred but M.S. acceptable). 4 Specific training/knowledge in nutrition of wildlife and aquatic species is desirable. 5 Familiarity with animal behavior and animal welfare issues. 6 Knowledge of nutritional laboratory techniques (NIR, XRF, in vitro systems) 7 Knowledge of statistical methods and experimental designs. 8 Specific knowledge of Microsoft and nutrition formulation (e.g. Zootrition) software. 9 Excellent communication skills (oral, written). Term: This is a two-year position with the potential to re-new for an additional year. This position reports to Dr. Eduardo V. Valdes, Nutritionist, Disney’s Animal Programs and Dr. Charles Staples, University of Florida, Department of Animal Sciences. Salary: Commensurate with experience. Please send letter of intent
