Alligator, Chinese
(Alligator sinensis)
No nutrition chapter, no husbandry manual.
“Chinese alligator diets are not distinctly different than most crocodilians
diets offered in US zoos. Adults and larger juveniles are offered mice and
freshwater fishes (eg., golden shiners, fathead minnows). Goldfish should be
avoided as they have been linked to fatty liver disease. Crayfish, earthworms,
and occasionally snails are offered in supplement to the mice-fish core diet.
The diet of hatchlings is similar with smaller mice and fw fishes offered as
well as crustaceans, molluscs, earthworms, and insects (crickets, super
mealworms).” John Behler Species Coordinator, Chinese Alligator SSP

Ferret, Black-Footed
(Mustela nigripes)
“Toronto's Small Carnivore mix: Approx. 70gm per ferret once daily (pm).
We supplement with a hard kibble for dental/gingival health. This can be Hill's
Feline C/D kibble or similar cat or ferret chow. Just a few (5-10) pieces
since it is only for the mechanical effect. A whole hamster may be substituted
as well. When there are kits with dam- we offer whole live or killed
hamsters to accustom the kits to fresh killed prey and also hunting/killing
practice before they face a prairie dog if the pre-conditioning facilities, if
they go for release. This is in addition to the Toronto diet. Phoenix Zoo
has experimented with the Dallas Crown Carnivore diet and had good results this
year, so that may be a viable alternative if we need it.” Della Garell

Lemur, General
Iron Storage Disease in
Lemurs
The St. Louis Zoo recently hosted a one day working meeting on iron storage
disease in lemurs. This meeting was convened to address recurrent questions and
review pertinent literature regarding iron metabolism, iron storage,
hemochromatosis, and the prevalence and significance of iron storage disease in
lemur species. The meeting was attended by current advisors to the Prosimian TAG
in the fields of nutrition, veterinary medicine, and animal management as well
as invited participants from Academia and industry with specialties in
veterinary diagnostics, animal nutrition, and feed manufacturing. This working
paper is the result of this meeting and is the concensus of those attending.
This paper was presented as a guideline at the AZA Prosimian TAG mid-year
meeting held May 20, 2003 at the Brookfield Zoo, Brookfield, Illinois. The goal
of this paper is to provide current information to zoo professionals caring for
lemur species for developing a reasonable approach to defining the presence of
disease and to formulating nutritionally appropriate captive diets. Research
defining iron status in wild lemur species is ongoing as are studies to
determine the incidence and severity of iron storage disease in multiple species
of captive lemurs at multiple institutions.

leopards are “finicky” in their eating habits and more institutions are moving
towards feeding commercial diets. Clouded leopards also seem to sometimes
benefit from being fed whole chickens that they can pluck as behavioral
enrichment.” Norah Fletchall Species Coordinator, Clouded Leopard SSP.
