AAZV Mazuri Fund Grant About the FundsIn 2001, Mazuri announced their generous donation of funds to AAZV to be used for education and research over the next 3 years. In 2002, an ad hoc committee was formed to suggest specific ways to use the money. Their recommendations were reviewed and approved by the Board of Directors at the 2002 annual meeting and the AAZV Mazuri Grant Program was created. These grants will be awarded to projects that meet the following criteria: · Are directly related to zoological medicine · Affect/impact a broad audience · Enhance the profession of zoological medicine Two categories of awards have been created: education and research. Education Money will be awarded for production of educational materials or to support workshop/symposia that address health issues. Education materials should be practically based and applicable to any veterinary audience. Veterinarians and veterinary schools around the world will use these training tools. Suggested topics include, but are not limited to, zoo nutrition, drug safety and delivery (darting equipment, etc), zoo medicine as a career, blood collection, anesthesia, enrichment/training for medical behaviors, endoscopy/ultrasound, radiology, pathology, clinical pathology in the field, or toxic plants. Whenever possible, subject matter should be well established and not likely to quickly outdate. If video is used, the presentation should be approximately 15-30 min in length. CDs could be in PowerPoint or in an interactive format. Workshop/symposia should have a defined goal and information from the workshop (proceedings, recommendations, etc) will be distributed/available to AAZV members. Awarded monies will not support salaries, the purchase of permanent equipment, institutional overhead or travel expenses to conferences. One copy of any produced materials will be held by AAZV and one copy given to Mazuri. Research Criteria for projects include: · Research must be a clinically applicable issue related to zoological veterinary medicine · Should have a broad application – i.e. more than one species impacted, problem affecting more than one institution, AZA management research priorities · IACUC approval should accompany proposal if needed Key factors in the review process include consideration of research design, feasibility, significance of project, and potential applications. Evaluation of each proposal is based on its merit and quality relative to that of all other proposals. Funds do not support salaries, the purchase of permanent equipment, institutional overhead, tuition, or travel expenses to conferences. For all projects · A DVM (or equivalent) must be directly involved as principal investigator (PI) or co-PI · The PI or the co-PI must be a member of AAZV · Award amounts will not exceed $6000 Instructions for Applications Preproposals (limited to 2 pages) should be submitted by February 15th, 2007 to: Dr. Michele
Miller Electronic submissions in MSWord are preferable. If sending a hard copy, please send 6 copies. Authors will be notified of acceptance or rejection of the pre-proposal by March 15th. If asked to submit a complete proposal, those will be due by May 1, 2007. Pre-proposals will be reviewed by the AAZV Mazuri Grant Committee. This committee and at least 2 outside reviewers will also review complete proposals. Final decisions will be announced at the annual meetings of AAZV (usually in October but sometimes in August or September). Proposals should have a start date after October; retroactive funding will not be considered. Projects should be completed within 18 months of start date. Awardees must submit a report of their accomplishments to date due two weeks before the annual AAZV meeting and a final report due within one month of completion of the project.. Awardees are expected to submit their results for presentation at the AAZV annual conference following completion of the project. Pre-proposals should have at least ¾” margins, be in an easily readable 12 pt. font, no more than 2 pages and should contain: 1. Title with: a. applicants’ personal and contact information (name, complete mailing address, institutional affiliation, telephone and fax numbers, email address) b. names and affiliations of co-investigators c. project information (project title, location, project start date, proposed duration of support, amount requested, whether the proposal is part of a larger on-going research project or a phase of a larger project) 2. Project narrative that should include: a. project’s specific goals and objectives b. BRIEF background for development of hypotheses c. specific application of the results 3. Methodology – brief description 4. Schedule for the project 5. Amount requested and brief description of how those funds will be used Full proposals (limited to 10 pages) should include: 1. Title page with: a. applicants’ personal and contact information (name, complete mailing address, institutional affiliation, telephone and fax numbers, email address) b. names and affiliations of co-investigators c. project information (project title, location, project start date, proposed duration of support, amount requested, whether the proposal is part of a larger on-going research project or a phase of a larger project) 2. Project narrative that should include: a. project’s specific goals and objectives b. background for development of hypotheses c. specific application of the results 3. Methodology should detail: a. description and justification of study design (provide sample sizes, planned statistical analyses, duration of study, appropriateness of methods) b. use and contact with animals c. names and addresses of all students and collaborators 4. Schedule for the project including a. initiation date b. timetables for data collection and analyses c. completion date d. publication of results/presentation at AAZV 5. Budget – a summary of the operating budget for the entire project including total funds requested or received from specific granting agencies or other sources 6. Detailed budget, including justification for each budgetary category, for the amount requested from AAZV Mazuri Grant 7. Literature cited 8. Proof that all necessary permits have been or can be obtained 9. Additional information such as letters of support from SSP/TAG and/or participating institutions or agencies, IACUC approval, etc. 10. A short curriculum vitae (< 2 pages) for each of the principal investigators
