NAG Husbandry Manual Nutrition Chapter Format

Husbandry Manual Nutrition Chapters Should include the Following Information:

• ONE PAGE EXECUTIVE SUMMARY AT THE BEGINNING OF THE CHAPTER
  • Brief overview of information included in the chapter written in laymen language

• LITERATURE REVIEW
  • Include description of natural diet and composition
  • Include a summary of information from obscure or difficult to find articles

• SUMMARY OF NUTRITION SURVEYS (IF CONDUCTED)
   
• FEEDING SCHEDULE/FEEDING LOCATION(S) – this section should be easily copied for possible use on diet cards
   
• NUTRIENT CONTENT OF DIET
  • Include nutrient specifications for complete feeds used in the diet, if the appropriate forms of certain nutrients are known, nutrient form should be specified as well (i.e. D3)
  • Include ingredient specifications for complete feeds (e.g.. corn/soy based products has proven best or avoid products containing wheat etc…)
  • Include changes in nutrient levels for different physiological stages (growth, maintenance etc..)

• DIET AND FEEDING INFORMATION
  • Include food recommendations (in general or in food groups to allow for flexibility in food item availability. Avoid citing specific products or manufacturers)
  • Include quantities and appropriate size of food items
  • Include behavior related to feeding (i.e. consumption, search, rumination etc…)
  • Include information of the stimulation of appropriate feeding behaviors (i.e. food presentation)
  • Include an extractable table within this section that can be easily copied for possible use as a diet card
• HAND-REARING PROTOCOL (DETAILS MAY REFER TO INFANT DIET/CARE NOTEBOOK) NUTRIENT REQUIREMENT RECOMMENDATIONS AND/OR GUIDELINES (WITH APPROPRIATE MODEL(S) IDENTIFIED)
  • Include a description of the gut and basic information on digestive anatomy
  •  
• HEALTH OR OTHER PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED OR POTENTIALLY ASSOCIATED TO DIET
   
• BIBLIOGRAPHY - CITE ALL REFERENCES USED; OTHER AS AVAILABLE
